This timber framed corridor overlooking the Willamette River was originally built as an open loggia connecting two structures of the home and the entry courtyard. Many days throughout the year it was engulfed in morning fog or driving rain. During the course of renovating this home the decision was made to enclose the loggia. Each opening was templated so the new windows would fit the existing spaces and maintain tight tolerances with all horizontal mullions aligning. The new interior space is not conditioned but the temperature is maintained well throughout most of the year simply by controlling the air movement.

We created our own wheels and track systems for these two rolling panels. The partition is rolled out into the space for more privacy in the dining area or stored back against the wall for more casual use and to provide open circulation space. The wooden partition was a collaboration with drwdesignbuild, the general contractor and designer in charge of the extensive remodel of this home.

The steel door is 10 ga. hot-rolled sheet with a carefully applied clear finish that beautifully captures and reflects the colors of the space it occupies. Also pictured are custom guide wheels for the bottoms of the panels, escutcheon plates on the swinging door and the steel countertop on the dining room buffet cabinet.

Flux Design built every component of this door from scratch, including the tracks, wheels and counterweight system. The clients wanted a door in the style of the old tinned fire barriers from turn-of-the-century industrial warehouses that possessed the same detailing and hand-worked craftsmanship.

The door panel is clad with zinc sheets, in a flat-lock style of interlocking sheets covering all surfaces of the custom built door.

The clad door weighs over 400 lbs. but glides smoothly on precision bearing wheels with very little force. The counterweight balances the door at any position, moving up and down steady as a piston as the door rolls open and shut. The door balances perfectly under the track but a floor mounted keeper prevents the user from swinging the door into the finished wall surface. It also provides a deep trough to allow for the elevation change of the bottom of the door as it closes.

Images of the door and track under construction can be seen on our blog both before and after the zinc was applied.

This small cabin on an Oregon coastal river has amazing views and no walls for a TV. This mounting stand rides up into the rafters on a counterweighted piston to stow the TV out of sight when not in use.

Custom flame cut counterweights balance the TV in any position. The caster wheels are custom built and spin on bearings with a 1/4″ groove for the cable.

We also built this steel wardrobe and blackened steel door frame for a sliding partition.
