Steel plate surrounds and adjustable steel shelves were built into this recess of the family room. The formed shelves are reasonably lightweight but will bear a great deal of weight without deflection. The hot-rolled steel plate was clear coated for preservation and to highlight the color variations within the steel.

A heavy plate steel base for a kitchen table. A thick slab of reclaimed oak will be used for the top. To describe this table as stout is an understatement.

We built this table in three parts that easily bolt together for the purposes of shipping. A dark patina with slight bronze undertones was applied to the steel.

During the bathroom remodel, 115 year-old framing lumber was salvaged from a dropped ceiling and small partition wall which were removed. All of the exterior cladding of the cabinet body, face-frames and door-fronts were made with this salvaged fir. The remnants from the old square nail holes are still visible.

One quarter inch thick hot-rolled plate steel was blued and finished for this appearance. The cast resin was fabricated by Tom Ghilarducci.

We wrapped this double-swinging door in hot-rolled steel sheet with a fine clear coating. This material and finish technique were used on several other pieces throughout the home. The patterns and color variation within the mill scale on the steel sheets brings visual interest to the surfaces while the low sheen finish captures the color and warmth of the spaces on both sides of this doorway.

The water staining on the buffet table top is evocative of the veining exhibited in marble.

We replaced the original Rixon escutcheon plates with some of our own to match the door. The countersunk, oval-head screws on an irregular array give a little extra personality to the door.

The table base is open and light, with clean lines and TIG welded connections. The wooden top is at a comfortable height for standing conversation and food preparation or for seating at stools.

We built and installed this media cabinet for an Oregon beach house. The upper unit is composed of 1/4″ thick steel plate and utilizes half-lap and through tenon connections at all the corners and dividers. These highlight the precise joinery, but also made it feasible to assemble the heavy components on site and restrict all welds and fasteners to non-visible locations. The 3/8″ thick steel plate lower unit cantilevers out from the wall. It is bolted to the wall by fasteners that are hidden behind the finished wall veneer. Reinforcing ribs welded to the top surface of the horizontal plates are hidden within the oak bench top.

A recessed light trough is also incorporated into both the upper and lower units. Concealed LED strip lights illuminate the walls.

This project is a collaboration with Doug Chamblin Furniture, who fabricated all the wooden components. A clear finish applied to the hot-rolled steel plate highlights the characteristics, colors and textures of the steel.

Flux Design completed several other projects in this home including the main staircase and guardrails.

This table was built for the screening room for Weiden + Kennedy. It is all aluminum and measures 6′ x 20′.
